Bayhorse Ghost Town - Challis, Idaho

Bayhorse Ghost Town is a historic mining town located along the Salmon River near Challis, Idaho. It was founded in the late 1870s after the discovery of silver and quickly grew into a busy community with mines, mills, hotels, a school, and a post office. At its peak, Bayhorse was one of the most important mining centers in central Idaho, producing large amounts of silver, lead, and zinc. When silver prices fell in the early 1900s, mining declined and the town was gradually abandoned. Today, Bayhorse is preserved as a state historic site, with several original stone buildings, ruins, and mining structures still standing, offering a glimpse into Idaho’s mining past and frontier life.
