The Boise winter inversion is a weather condition that commonly occurs during cold months when a layer of warm air traps colder air near the ground in the Treasure Valley. Because Boise sits in a valley surrounded by mountains, cold air can settle and become stuck beneath the warmer air above, preventing normal air circulation. This inversion traps pollutants such as vehicle exhaust, wood smoke, and industrial emissions, leading to poor air quality and visible haze. Inversions can last for days or even weeks until a strong storm, wind, or temperature change breaks the trapped air layer. During severe inversions, residents may be advised to limit outdoor activity and reduce burning wood to help protect air quality and public health.
