Broad-Winged Hawk(Rare for Idaho) - Island Park, Idaho

This Broad-winged Hawk was an incredibly rare sighting for us and for Idaho, taken in May of 2025 in Island Park, Idaho.

Broad-winged hawks are medium-sized raptors found mainly in Eastern North America, especially in forests with nearby water. They are known for their compact bodies, short tails with bold black-and-white bands, and broad wings that help them soar efficiently. These hawks feed on small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and occasionally small birds. One of their most remarkable traits is migration: each fall, thousands of broad-winged hawks travel together in large groups called kettles, flying from North America to Central and South America. They rely on rising warm air currents, or thermals, to conserve energy during these long journeys. Broad-winged hawks are usually quiet and hard to spot during the breeding season, but their high-pitched whistle-like call can sometimes give away their location.
