The Wapiti Lake Pack was formed due to a split of the Canyon Pack, establishing a new territory centered around Hayden Valley and Yellowstone Lake.
 
The Wapiti pack has become known for its remarkable ability to hunt Bison. While elk are the primary prey for most Yellowstone wolves, the Wapiti Lake Pack has often been observed hunting not only juvenile Bison, but adults as well.
