Great horned owls are large, powerful birds of prey found throughout North and South America in habitats ranging from forests and deserts to farmland and cities. They are easily recognized by their prominent ear tufts, which look like horns but are actually feathers, and their bright yellow eyes. These owls are excellent hunters with strong talons and a varied diet that includes mammals, birds, reptiles, and even other owls. Great horned owls are mostly nocturnal and have exceptional hearing and night vision that help them hunt in the dark. They are also known for their deep, echoing hoots and for nesting early in the year, sometimes in late winter, often using abandoned nests built by other birds.
