Mackay, Idaho

Mackay, Idaho is a small town in Custer County located along the Big Lost River in central Idaho. It was founded in the early 1900s to support nearby copper, lead, silver, and zinc mining operations in the Lost River Range. The town is named after John Mackay, one of the famous “Bonanza Kings” of mining. Mackay sits at an elevation of about 5,900 feet and is surrounded by mountains, making it a hub for outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, hunting, and snowmobiling. Agriculture, especially ranching, also plays an important role in the local economy. Today, Mackay is known for its quiet rural lifestyle, strong community, and scenic views of the surrounding peaks.
